K-8 Curriculum

K - 8 Curriculum

Upper Room Christian School currently uses a 2016 or newer curriculum to ensure we are up to date.  As allowed by the New York State Standards, we update our curriculum every 5 years through Eastern Suffolk Boces.

Below you will find a brief overview of the curriculum that is used throughout the K-8 grades.

K-1st:  Kindergarten and 1st grade use the Reading Wonders Comprehensive Program.  This program offers an integrated approach to help young readers become stronger readers and writers.  It builds a stronger reading foundation, develops oral vocabulary, provides access to complex text through text and read alouds and builds foundation for close reading.  They also use Harcourt Math curriculum and Foreman Diamond Science.  This gives them knowledge to sort and classify, patterns, numbers, money, addition and more.

2nd-5th:  Second through fifth grade utilize the Journey Readers Curriculum.  This is a reading program that offers a close reading routine to build better readers while providing intervention for struggling students.  Our math curriculum goes from Go Math! in the 2nd and 3rd grade to on Core Math in the the 5th grade.  Both of these programs, offer a new and engaging approach to cover the new NYS standards.  Our Science curriculum is a state-of-the-art science program called Science Fusion.  It is designed for building inquiry, STEM, and optimized for learning in the classroom, at home, on a laptop, a tablet, or using a science textbook. The digital curriculum, virtual labs and hands-on activities, and write-in science textbook develops important critical thinking skills that prepare students for success in future science courses and in the workplace.  Our Social studies curriculum is the Harcourt Social Studies curriculum.  The Harcourt Social Studies Leveled Reader program provides three nonfiction Leveled Readers for every unit of the core curriculum. The below-level, on-level, and above-level offerings contain the same concepts and reading skills as the corresponding Student Editions, but can also be used to support, reinforce, and extend any core basal program.

6th-8th:  Sixth through eighth grade utilize the Voyages Grammar & Writing, Prentice Hall Literature and the Wordly Wise 3000.  The Voyages Grammar & Writing is the result of decades of research and practice by experts in the field of grammar and writing. Responding to the needs of teachers and students, this new edition provides ample opportunities for practice and review to ensure mastery and improved performance on standardized tests.  Prentice Hall Literature is a comprehensive literacy program that brings together the cornerstones of the New York State Standards and provides you with a full array of instructional resources. The Wordly Wise expands critical grade level vocabulary and improve reading comprehension. We utilize a Glencoe Math program to a Pre Algebra curriculum.  Our science goes from life science to physical science and touches into Earth Science.  This will prepare students for their Regents Earth Science course in the high school.  Our 6th through 8th grade social studies curriculum covers history from 1914 to the present and is taught with a Christian World View.

All Upper Room Christian School K-8 students take Bible, Art, Music, Computer and Physical Education every year they are enrolled with us.
